Building a Green Timber Frame Home in Vermont

There is nothing quite as rewarding for a timber frame company to build a completely off-the-grid green timber frame home. Davis Frame Company, along with our partners, was more than happy to take on this challenge presented by one of our clients.

Off-site solar panels and collectors.

The timber frame home was designed by Sam Sherrill and overseen by our president, Jeff Davis. With a thick portfolio of building our timber frame homes, builder Dave Dutton, from Dutton Construction, Killington, VT, served as the timber frame assembler and builder.

This 3014 square foot modified Salt Box home, located on 80 acres in Central Vermont, incorporated the following into the design and plan:

  • Passive Solar in design taking advantage of south facing lot to receive maximum sun exposure for the winter months.
  • Reclaimed Douglas Fir timbers.
  • Principal Common Rafter timber frame system.
  • Insulated with Structural Insulated Panels (R-26 walls; R-40 ceiling)
  • Loewen windows for maximum energy efficiency.
  • Rogue Valley doors.
  • Trim is inland cedar by Potlatch which is FSC certified cedar.
  • Use of solar panels.
  • Geothermal heat pump.
  • Grid-tied photovoltaics.
  • Masonry stove (used to store heat) - Tulikivi.
  • Use of Energy Star appliances.
  • Uses minimum to none VOC paints.
  • Uses compact florescent bulbs (CFB) which are proven to be the most energy efficient.

Davis Frame and our partners designed this dream timber frame home and with green building techniques that served to to exceed passive solar design and energy efficiency standards. The home owner was concerned with green elements and designed his home in such a way to be self-sufficient and completely off the grid.

Want a Green Home? Build a Timber Frame!

In an article from realtor.org, 15 eco-friendly home trends and must-know terminology are outlined. Included in this list are the benefits of timber frame homes:
"Timber framing: Timber framing requires significantly less lumber than the traditional “stick-built” housing and almost always incorporates superior insulating panels (SIPS), which keeps heat and air conditioning from escaping the house. There’s less waste when large timbers are used, compared with conventional construction that produces sawdust and waste every time a 2-by-4 stud is planed, says Frank Baker, president of Insulspan and Riverbend Framing, part of PFB Corp. in Calgary, Canada. In addition, less energy is needed to power machines and kiln dry wood because timber framing uses freshly cut wood, he says. Timbers are prefabricated and arrive at the building site ready to be assembled, paring construction waste. Costs vary according to finishes selected, just as they do with stick-built housing."

The energy efficiency of a timber frame is exceptional. In our timber frame homes and buildings we use SIPs (structural insulated panels), which have become widely recognized as being far superior to other methods for sealing and insulating buildings. When Davis Frame builds a home and then helps you apply for an Energy Star Rating, your new timber frame home is automatically exempt from the blower door test because of the incredibly high performance of our building process.

To complement our use of SIPs, we've incorporated BioBased insulation which uses soy-based technology to replace petroleum-based fill that is commonly used in SIP construction. We're extremely proud of this decision and have invested in a new building that enables us to custom make our own panels. Due to this process, a Davis Frame timber frame home can help reduce our country's dependency on foreign oil, utilize the renewable resources of soybeans grown by 681,000 American farmers, while at the same time creating a superior product!
