Classic Barn Floor Plan Feature: Classic Sugarhouse 2

The Classic Barn Home model, Classic Sugar House designed by Davis timber frame company is the perfect size home for anyone looking for open space in a modest space. The timber frame sugar house offers 1,600 sq. ft. and is a great way to build an energy efficient and cost effective timber frame. Traditionally, sugar houses were built to be a small cabin where spring time sap was collected from sugar maple trees and then boiled into maple syrup. Most sugar houses included a small space where bunks were typically used for those that were working hard on making maple syrup.

At Davis Frame Company, we were inspired by the sugar house characteristics that we decided to create a couple timber frame sugar house models to offer homeowners an open floor plan that is both beautiful and energy efficient. A traditional sugar house features a vented cupola to allow steam to out during the maple sugaring process. We added a cupola to our sugar house models to give it the ultimate sugar house character. This home also features a nice big timber frame porch to allow you to enjoy the outdoors.

Classic Sugar House 2 from our Classic Barn Home model line features an open first floor plan featuring a separate timber frame kitchen and the dining room flowing into the living room. With this open concept first floor plan it allows for plenty of room for entertaining in a small space. The first floor also features a half bath and mudroom.

The second floor has two spacious bedrooms and a full bathroom. If you prefer to have more of an open space on the second floor and don't mind sacrificing a bedroom and square footage, our Classic Sugar House 1 model may be perfect for you as it features a loft on the second floor. Please visit our timber frame website to view the floor plans for this slightly modified sugar house.

Floor Plan Feature: Timber Frame Farmhouse

One of our favorite pre-designed timber frame homes from our Classic Barn Home line is the Classic Farmhouse 1B. This timber frame floor plan offers traditional elements that make it have true farmhouse character. This traditional farm style home is perfect in any setting and offers 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and 2,943 sq. ft. making this a spacious home to grow in. The entry of the timber frame farmhouse opens up into the spacious living room to the left of the entry. To the right of the entry is an open dining room and kitchen. The openness of the kitchen and dining rooms allows for plenty of space to enjoy a meal with your family. A mud room is also off of the kitchen to allow for first floor laundry or a place to store your shoes and coats.

Holiday Timber Frame Home: Davis Timber Frame Model

Here at Davis timber frame, we decorated our model home last winter for the holidays. This was a team effort as a few of us got together to put up a tree and decorate the timber frame home in holiday spirit. The idea was to professionally photograph our model home so we would have a nice variety of seasonal timber frame pictures to share with clients. Perhaps the best picture that was taken was at dusk by photographer Rich Frutchey. As you can see in the picture above, there is nothing more calming than a beautifully decorated timber frame home in the winter time!

On the exterior photo, you can see how the great room wall of windows shows the decorated tree and the lights pop out creating a warm and inviting feeling. To really make our timber frame model stand out, we added lights to the porch. Timber frames offer beauty for all seasons and especially look nice dressed up during the holiday season.

As you can see, we did not stop at decorating the first floor great room, kitchen and dining room. We decided to decorate the timber frame model from the inside and out! The master bedroom, master bathroom and loft were also decorated. Quite a few people scheduled a tour to come see our model home during the time it was decorated which made them realize how warm a timber frame home can be. What better way to show the warmth and beauty of a home than during the holidays?

Custom Floor Plan Feature: The Mountainside

Joan and Brian Moriarty decided to build a custom timber frame in Colorado after frequent vacations to the area. Originally from New England, with a desire to design a timber frame to fit the setting of Colorado, they hired local architect Karen Smuland to design their dream retirement home.

The timber frame home was designed to blend in with the mountain setting and overlook a nearby lake. The couple chose Davis Frame Company to provide the timber framing after falling in love with our product and the simple beauty of our timber frames. After being published in in several different magazine articles and receiving a great amount of interest in this mountain style timber frame home, Davis Frame Company decided to make this a custom floor plan feature on our website.

This mountain home floor plan features 4,200 sq. ft. of living space. The entry of the home leads into the spacious great room and flows nicely with an open layout to the dining room and kitchen. The homeowners wanted to have an open floor plan that would allow for entertaining. There are also two spacious decks off of the great room which allows the homeowners to expand its entertaining outside during the warm months.

The decks off the great room also allows the owners to take in the beauty of the Colorado mountains surrounding them. This timber frame would look great in any mountainous region or any lot where you may want to take advantage of your future homes' views. This timber frame also features first floor laundry and a master suite.

The second floor of this Colorado mountain home has two large bedrooms and two bathrooms. An inspiring study space in the loft was designed to enjoy the surrounding views in multiple directions.
This timber frame floor plan would be ideal for a custom home in Colorado, a northeast mountain home or even a western mountain home. The design of this home is a unique and modern look that incorporates traditional timber framing and would look great on a building lot that has great views of the mountains or a lake. Building Additions using Timber Frame and Insulated Panels

(Lakeside timber frame and SIPs addition to an existing stick built home)

Although we're facing difficult economic conditions, with labor and materials costs decreasing, now is a great time to build a dream home. However, if this is not feasible at this time, have you considered an addition using timber frame construction?

Timber frame additions, as well as additions with SIP construction, are becoming increasingly popular with existing homeowners. We receive numerous requests to design and build an addition to an existing timber frame, panelized home, stick built home or log home.

Typically, people desire an addition to simply add room and more living space to their current home. Other times homeowners have already built their dream home modestly with intentions of adding on to their home in the future. At Davis timber frame company, we have even had a few past clients come back years later to add a timber frame addition to their home. By using Davis timber frames or our sister company, eSIPs panels for your addition, you will be investing in beauty and energy efficiency.

Another reason many homeowners use timber frame construction for their addition is because they love the look of timber frame, but don't want to build a timber frame home from scratch. Adding timber frame or using panelized construction to an existing home is much more cost effective than building a custom timber frame home. This is definitely a great option for those that want to add more space to their existing home or change the layout of the home.

(Timber frame addition adds additional space to this current home)

Our pre-designed Classic Barn Home line offers 25 models and different sized floor plans. Often the smaller Classic Barn models such as the Classic Homestead series and Classic Studio series are requested floor plans for an addition to an existing home. Our design staff also has the expertise and knowledge to help you design an addition that will compliment your current home. Many of our clients that have added a timber frame addition to their current home have been pleased on how their home and the addition comes together nicely and even looks like it was built together.

Another option to add to your existing property would be to build a specialty building such as a separate small building that you can use to entertain, use as guest quarters, a shed or any other idea you may in mind. One of our past clients built a Japanese style timber frame tea house as a specialty building on his property to entertain during the summer months. Click on the pavilion photo below to see pictures of the specialty project.

Vermont Timber Frame Home: Ski Patrol

Once planned as a vacation retreat, a Vermont home proves to be so irresistible that one family decides to set down permanent roots.

Reprinted from Timber Home Living

The Lennox home also comes alive through the fine woodworking of their general contractor Dan Rapphahn’s company, Northland Builders, in Peru, Vermont. “I use a small crew, and we’re all trim carpenters and cabinet makers,” Dan says. Floors of red birch, hickory and ash give each room a distinct character. For the basement bar and home theater, pine harvested from the Lennox’s property adds warmth.

The house was intended as a vacation home, but while they were building, the couple’s youngest son announced he wanted to attend Stratton Mountain School, a skiing academy, and their oldest boy, also an avid skier, said he’d enjoy seeing more of his Vermont friends. The decision was simple. “We decided to make the move,” says Jeff. And now they live there year-round.

Yes, you can give into the envy now. If you’ve ever had a dream about building that perfect timber home in New England ski country, here’s a fair warning: You’re going to have deal with some envy as you read this story.

Jeff and Linda Lennox and their two teenage sons were living in Connecticut, but they regularly spent holidays in Vermont, where they had a second home. When the couple decided to build a larger timber frame home there, they thought it would be for vacations and eventually retirement. “We’d always been interested in the timber frame structure,” Jeff says, whose father built a timber home and introduced them to the concept. “We didn’t want anything quite so rustic, but we loved the idea.”

The couple found 27 acres of wooded land with a pond and a view that stretches 25 miles across verdant folds of forest to Stratton Mountain. Then, incorporating ideas they’d seen in various floor plans, Jeff sketched out a basic design. He brought it to Davis Frame Co. in Claremont, New Hampshire, after talking to company representatives at a home show.

It turned out to be a wise choice. “Our company thrives on personalization,” says Reid Greenberg, director of marketing. That would prove critical as the Lennox’s revised and worked out the details of their plan with the company. “It was the largest project we’ve done that didn’t have an architect,” says Reid.

The Lennox’s home turned out so well, Davis Frame created a model, the Forest View, based on the design and has four similar houses in the works. “We should give the Lennox’s a commission,” jokes Reid.

Simple Design, Grand Dimensions
The secret seems to be a design that captures the essential virtues of a timber frame home without seeming ostentatious. The home’s soaring great room has a dramatic walk-around central fireplace, eaves more than 16 feet high, 10-by-12-inch Douglas fir beams with chamfered edges and a wall of windows to take advantage of the south-facing view. “I love being down in the great room or up in the loft with the sun streaming in through the windows,” says Linda. “We often see beavers, river otters and all kinds of wildlife near the pond. I just love that.”

By choosing one of our pre-designed barn homes, you this will save you time and get your into your dream timber frame home faster.

Emphasizing simple lines and large groupings of windows, this first floor plan design of Classic Barn 2 features a ground-floor master suite, central kitchen, cathedral-ceiling great room and dining room.

The second floor includes a central loft, two bedrooms and a full bath. The loft provides a spacious bonus area to curl up and read a book. Many timber frame home's incorporate lofts to create a cozy space and to offer an open view of the great room. Often homeowner's love the idea of a loft to enjoy the beauty of the timbers.
