What is the Difference between Timber Frame and Post and Beam Construction?

Here at Davis Frame Company, we often get the question, "What is the difference between Timber Frame and Post and Beam construction?

Both timber frame and post and beam construction share a similarity and that is that they both are built to leave the timbers exposed in the interior. Often timber framing and post and beam construction are thought to be the same, but they are not.

Timber framing is distinguished by its traditional wooden joinery, also known as mortise and tenon joinery. The timbers are typically joined together by oak pegs. Timber framing creates an authentic wooden structure with undeniable beauty and a durable structure that will last for generations.

Post and Beam construction does not always use wooden joinery but rather metal brackets. Also, post and beam construction usually uses vertical and horizontal timber pieces and is constructed in layers and each floor is built independently. One piece is erected at a time, unlike timber framing where a timber frame bent or wall system is raised at a time.
