Timber Frame Great Room Addition in Vermont

We're working on a timber frame addition for a new conventional home located near a popular Vermont mountain. This new home will feature 8 custom hammer beam trusses in its new Davis Frame timber frame great room. Being that we have a team of skier's at the office, we are pretty excited to be part of this project; in fact, this is our 4th timber frame project in this skiing development!

Timber frame dining room with fabric chairs

Our tip this week is about home decorating. Are you looking for a change in your home but don't want buy new furniture? Move furniture, art work and accents around to different rooms. If moving furniture isn't an option, consider using slip covers to change the look of your sofa and chairs. To change the look of your dining room, replace the chairs on the end with a fun chair with fabric. Have an old grungy trunk? Paint it and use it as a coffee table.

Make your own trunk like this Brookstone one by painting it barn red!

We hope you enjoyed our tip! Be sure to check out our weekly tip every Wednesday

Build a Small and Efficient Post and Beam Home

timber frame home in nh

At Davis Timber Frame, we receive many inquiries from prospects wondering if we work with clients who wish to build a small post and beam home. Although many of our photos on our website feature homes between 3,000-4,000 SF, over the past couple of years we have been seeing a trend with our clients and many wish to build smaller homes.

With the rise of energy costs and the current state of the economy, people are being more careful with their buying decisions and buying only what they need. This is the same strategy many prospective new buyers use when planning their new home. People are focusing more on quality finishing touches, rather than the size of the home. It's not really about the size of the home, as it is about how to make your floor plan work for you and meet your needs. The majority of our client's timber frame homes feature an open first floor plan and this helps maximize entertaining space without having to add square footage; this one way to make a modest space feel "large."

timber frame great room

Our timber frame model home is 2,000 SF. The first floor features a very open layout with the great room, dining room, kitchen open to one another. This space can easily accommodate 20 guests.

Other design elements to consider that make a smaller home feel not so small are to: add lots of windows and/or skylights, tall ceilings, multi-functional rooms, built-ins, neutral colors and ample storage space! Creating enough storage space will help keep the clutter down and will also help make your home feel spacious. Not having enough storage can make your home feel small.

Also, most of us tend to design our bedrooms much larger than we need them; the main focus should be maximizing square footage in the main living areas of the home and scaling back bedroom sizes and the number of bathrooms. To help determine your square footage needs, we suggest making a list of priorities of your wants and needs for your new home. We can help you design a timber frame home that works around what you want and also meet your square footage needs.

The majority of the post and beam homes we design and craft now are between 2,000-2,500 SF and by no means is this average small, but they are more efficient than a large home and there is typically no wasted space. Building a smaller home will save you on energy costs and the time it takes to clean and maintain your home!

How to Save Ideas For Your New Home

Dreaming of building a new timber frame home someday, but not quite ready? It's never too early to start the planning process. In fact, making a list of what you like about your current home and what you would like to change is a great way to get started. We also recommend starting a folder where you can store pictures and ideas during your research. You never know what you might come across and tearing it out of a magazine and placing it in a folder is a great way to keep track of your ideas.

Or there are online tools to help you gather your ideas. Have you checked out Pinterest yet? If you haven't you should! It is the latest and greatest social network out there that focuses on pictures! Once you sign up for an account, you can start pinning photos to you custom folders called "boards." Pinterest has a variety of categories such as home decor, architecture, travel, books, fashion and lots more. This is a great place to save ideas about everything in your life, whether you like to cook and are looking for recipes or you are looking for home decorating ideas.

We hope you enjoyed this little tip about how to save your ideas for your new home! If you have any questions about our services or timber frame packages, feel free to give us a call at any time during your research. 1-800-636-0993.
